Publisher and Editorial Governance
SJS is published by HM Publisher; editorial decisions rest with the Editor-in-Chief and are independent of payment, commercial interests, and institutional relationships. Editors declare competing interests and recuse themselves where necessary.
Complaints and Appeals
Appeals and complaints are sent to the editorial office and assessed by an editor not involved in the disputed matter; concerns about the Editor-in-Chief are referred to the publisher. Good-faith complaints are handled confidentially and without retaliation.
Data Availability and Reproducibility
Every article carries a Data Availability Statement. Identifiable clinical material is not released without consent and lawful authority, and a reasoned explanation of restricted access is acceptable where participants must be protected.

Use of AI Tools
AI tools cannot be authors. Authors must disclose substantive use and verify every output; reviewers and editors must not upload confidential manuscripts to external AI services, and no automated tool makes an editorial decision.
Preservation and Self-Archiving
Issues and articles remain openly available through the journal archive, each with a registered DOI, and authors may self-archive the submitted, accepted, and published versions without embargo.
Corrections, Retractions and Article Updates
Material errors are addressed by dated, linked corrections, expressions of concern, or retractions, each explaining the reason. The original record is retained and changes are never made silently.

Retractions and expressions of concern
A retraction may be appropriate when findings are unreliable, publication is seriously unethical, or substantial plagiarism or redundant publication is established. A clearly identified notice explains the reason and who is retracting the work and is linked to the article. The original record is retained and marked as retracted whenever legally and ethically possible.
An expression of concern may be issued when a serious issue remains unresolved and readers need to be alerted. Removal of content is reserved for exceptional circumstances such as a legal requirement or serious privacy or safety risk; an explanatory record is retained where possible.
The journal handles contested decisions through its complaints and appeals procedure.
