Editorial workflow

STEP 01 · SUBMISSION

Email submission and completeness check

The editorial office records the submission and checks the article type, template, cover letter, title page, blinded manuscript, supporting files, and required declarations.

STEP 02 · 1–3 DAYS

Editorial assessment

Editors assess alignment with the journal’s aims and scope, originality, scholarly quality, basic methodological suitability, and similarity. Similarity checking may be supported by ORCA; all editorial judgments remain the responsibility of SJS editors.

STEP 03 · OJS ONBOARDING

OJS account and manuscript tracking

For manuscripts that pass editorial assessment, the journal creates an OJS account, enters the manuscript into the workflow, and sends account information to the corresponding author. Authors can then monitor the manuscript through OJS.

STEP 04 · 2–4 WEEKS

Double-blind peer review

The manuscript is evaluated by at least three independent reviewers, with particular attention to scientific substance, surgical or clinical relevance, methodology, analysis, interpretation, ethics, and reporting quality.

STEP 05 · EDITORIAL DECISION

Review synthesis and decision

After all three reviews are received, the editor synthesizes the recommendations and determines one of four outcomes: accept, minor revision, major revision, or decline.

STEP 06 · 1–2 WEEKS

Author revision

For a minor or major revision, authors submit a revised manuscript and a clear point-by-point response addressing every reviewer and editor comment within the stated timeframe.

STEP 07 · RE-EVALUATION

Reviewer/editor reassessment and Letter of Acceptance

The revised manuscript is reassessed by the reviewers and editor. When the revisions meet publication standards, SJS issues a formal Letter of Acceptance.

STEP 08 · ABOUT 1 WEEK

Copyediting, proofreading, and author approval

The accepted manuscript undergoes copyediting and proofreading. Editorial proofreading may be supported by EIGO; human editors and authors retain responsibility for the final text. The proofread version is returned to the corresponding author for approval.

STEP 09 · FINAL PROOF & PRODUCTION

Galley proof, final author check, and publication

A galley proof is issued for the author’s final check. After corrections and final approval, the manuscript enters production, receives its final publication metadata, and is published according to the journal’s schedule.
